NDA seat-sharing pact sees AIADMK contest majority of seats ahead of April 23 voting

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday released its first list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, naming Union Minister L Murugan from the Avanashi (SC) constituency.

Among other key candidates, Tamilisai Soundararajan has been fielded from Mylapore, while Vanathi Srinivasan will contest from Coimbatore (North).

NDA seat-sharing formula finalised

Under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) arrangement, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will contest 169 seats in the 234-member Assembly, while the BJP will field candidates in 27 constituencies.

Other allies in the NDA include the Pattali Makkal Katchi, led by Anbumani Ramadoss, which has been allotted 18 seats, and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, headed by T. T. V Dhinakaran, which will contest 11 seats.

High-stakes contest in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu will go to polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The current Assembly’s term ends on May 10.

The main contest is expected between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes the Congress, Left parties, DMDK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the NDA led by the AIADMK with BJP and its allies.

The election is being closely watched as the NDA aims to unseat the ruling DMK-led alliance in a politically significant southern state.
