The political battle over student protests has spilled onto the streets of Delhi, with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs set to march towards Parliament on Tuesday and accuse the Opposition of deliberately blocking a debate on the issue.

The NDA’s counter-protest comes amid a continuing deadlock in the Monsoon Session, with repeated disruptions over the police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar.

The ruling alliance plans to carry placards highlighting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is ready to address the issue in Parliament, while accusing the Opposition of refusing to allow the House to function.

NDA takes fight to Parliament gates

The NDA MPs are expected to march towards Parliament as a show of strength against the Opposition’s continued protests.

The ruling alliance plans to target the Opposition over its refusal to participate in a discussion on the student protests despite the government’s offer to allow a debate and have Amit Shah respond.

The move comes after days of political confrontation inside Parliament, with both sides accusing each other of preventing the House from functioning.

Amit Shah ready to respond

The government has maintained that it is prepared to discuss the police action during the student protests.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said Shah is ready to give a detailed response, provided the Opposition allows the House to function and participates in the discussion.

The Opposition, however, has continued to press for answers over the alleged use of force against protesters and has demanded clarity on who authorised the police action.

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has questioned whether the Home Ministry had authorised the action and sought accountability for the use of force against students.

Opposition says key questions remain unanswered

The Opposition has rejected the government’s offer as insufficient, insisting that its concerns must be addressed before normal proceedings can resume.

The confrontation has resulted in repeated disruptions of Parliament, with the government accusing the Opposition of avoiding debate while the Opposition argues that the Centre has not adequately answered its questions.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has also appealed to opposition parties to end their protests and allow parliamentary proceedings to continue.

JPSC-JSSC protests add another flashpoint

The NDA is also expected to highlight the police action against protesting job aspirants in Jharkhand.

Students demanding action over alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday. Protesters breached multiple barricades, following which authorities used lathis and water cannons to disperse them.

The aspirants have been demanding cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level examination, a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and reforms in the recruitment system.

The Jharkhand agitation has entered its third week and has become another political flashpoint, with opposition parties criticising the use of force against students.
