‘Ball in their court’: Vance on Iran after inconclusive talks

JD Vance on Tuesday reaffirmed Washington’s position that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, following inconclusive talks between the two countries.

Speaking to Fox News, Vance said Donald Trump has outlined key US expectations, including the transfer of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and strict verification measures. He added that the broader objective is to ensure Iran does not retain the capability to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels.

“I wouldn’t just say that things went wrong. I also think things went right. We made a lot of progress… but they didn’t move far enough,” Vance said, referring to recent negotiations.

He added that future talks remain possible but indicated that the next steps depend on Tehran. “The ball is in the Iranian court,” he said.

Talks show progress but no breakthrough

The comments follow the first phase of discussions held in Islamabad, where delegations engaged in extended negotiations lasting over 20 hours.

Vance described the talks as constructive in tone, noting that while some progress had been made, key differences remain unresolved, preventing a final agreement.

“We have had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians… but we have not reached an agreement,” he said.

    Focus on nuclear safeguards

The United States continues to emphasise verification and restrictions on uranium enrichment as central to any potential deal, while Iran has maintained that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes.

Further discussions are expected, though no timeline has been confirmed.
