CM orders probe, multiple investigations underway
At least one student died and over 100 others fell ill after consuming a mid-day meal at a government-run residential school in Mayurbhanj district, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Kakabandha Ashram School, where students reportedly developed symptoms after consuming food on Sunday morning. Parents alleged that the meal included items not part of the authorised menu.
Students fall ill after meal
According to officials, more than 100 students were initially taken to a local community health centre, with several later shifted to Baripada for treatment.
“Rupali Besra, a Class 5 student, had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on Monday. Despite continuous medical intervention, she died on Tuesday morning,” said Mayurbhanj District Collector Hema Kanta Say.
“At present, 66 students are undergoing treatment at the hospital, while another 41 are admitted to the community health centre. One medical team has been sent to the health centre while another is camping at the school,” the officer added.
Probe ordered, action initiated
Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the incident and ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death and illness.
“The RDC will visit Rasgobindpur on Wednesday morning to investigate the incident,” a statement from the CMO said.
Officials said both administrative and police investigations are underway, and further action will be taken based on findings.
Local protests and administrative action
Villagers staged protests, blocking a key road and demanding compensation and accountability.
Authorities have suspended the school’s headteacher and announced ex gratia compensation for the deceased student’s family. Medical teams continue to monitor the condition of the affected children.
Reacting to the incident, Bhakta Charan Das said, “Deeply anguished by the death of a student due to suspected food poisoning at Kakibandha Ashram School, Baripada where over 100 students have also fallen ill. This points to gross negligence and a serious systemic failure. Those responsible must be held accountable, and immediate action is essential to ensure student safety“.
