US set to drop bribery charges against Adani after he hired Trump Attorney

The New York Times reported that industrialist Gautam Adani offered a $10 billion investment in the US to avoid a $265 million bribery charge being faced in a US court. Adani has hired a new lawyer close to US President Donald Trump. The advocate to the US Justice Department reportedly made this offer.

“Now, according to several people with knowledge of the case, the Justice Department is planning to drop the charges altogether. The reversal came after the Indian billionaire, Gautam Adani, hired a new legal team led by Robert J. Giuffra Jr., one of President Trump’s personal lawyers.

“Mr. Giuffra’s efforts on Mr. Adani’s behalf culminated in a previously unreported meeting last month at the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington, according to people familiar with the meeting. Mr. Giuffra went through about 100 slides outlining why prosecutors lacked basic evidence, as well as the jurisdiction to even bring the case, one of the people said.

“Another slide also offered the government a sweetener: If prosecutors dropped the charges, Mr. Adani would be willing to invest $10 billion in the American economy and create 15,000 jobs, echoing a pledge he made in the wake of Mr. Trump’s election. While prosecutors later told Mr. Giuffra that the $10 billion investment would play no role in the resolution of the case, his offer received a favorable response from at least one senior Justice Department official at the meeting, according to people familiar with the meeting,” the New York Times report said.

Gautam Adani had been accused by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn of defrauding investors. The charges were originally brought against Mr. Adani by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. In November 2024, Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, Adani Group, and Adani’s US firm Azure Power were accused by the US Justice Department of paying $265 million in bribes in India to secure solar power purchase agreements.[1]
