Security agencies had identified Hamza Burhan as a key terror operative linked to South Kashmir

A wanted terrorist linked to the 2019 Pulwama attack was reportedly shot dead in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Thursday, according to sources.

The terrorist, identified as Hamza Burhan, was attacked by unidentified gunmen in Muzaffarabad, where he sustained multiple bullet injuries. Sources said he later succumbed to his wounds.

The incident took place in Muzaffarabad in PoK, though there has been no official statement so far from Pakistani authorities regarding the attackers or the motive behind the killing.

Linked to Pulwama terror operations

Security agencies had reportedly identified Hamza Burhan as one of the key figures associated with terror activities linked to the Pulwama attack and militant operations in South Kashmir.

Originally from Ratnipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, Burhan had reportedly travelled to Pakistan around seven years ago using valid documents before joining the terror outfit Al-Badr.

Over time, he allegedly rose to become the operational commander of the group and was involved in recruiting militants and arranging weapons supply for terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Accused of digital radicalisation

According to intelligence inputs, Burhan played a major role in radicalising Kashmiri youth through online propaganda and social media campaigns.

Investigators believed he extensively used “digital radicalisation” methods to recruit young people into militant networks and spread extremist messaging across the Valley.

In 2022, the Indian government officially designated him as a terrorist.

About the Pulwama attack

The Pulwama attack took place on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber targeted a convoy of CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

An explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a bus carrying security personnel, killing 40 CRPF jawans and injuring several others.

Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the attack, which sharply escalated tensions between India and Pakistan and led to India’s Balakot airstrikes.

The attack remains one of the deadliest terror strikes on Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
