The Church, foreign money, and the fear of scrutiny
The Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Vicars are caught with their cassocks up and trousers down. The evil intentions of the “ambassadors of God” stand exposed by their own acts and words. The palaces of Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops turn out to be war rooms where they devise strategies and plans to annihilate Sanatana Dharma. Leaders of the Abrahamic sect have understood that gullible Hindus can be taken for a ride, and that too easily.
What adds to the intensity of the hatred the Church has towards Narendra Modi is the statement by Congress leader and scion of the Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi, who declared in early June that the end is near for the Union government. “The Narendra Modi government will not be there in one year’s time. There is a massive uprising brewing in the country against Modi,” thundered Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in New Delhi. He also declared that Election Commissioners and judges were sending him messages soliciting that he save them from the high-handedness of the BJP government. It may be remembered that it was the Freedom of Religion Bill introduced by O P Tyagi in Parliament in 1978 that led to the fall of the Morarji Desai government, as the Church, led by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, staged widespread agitations against the law to prevent illegal religious conversion in the country. The Congress had extended open support to Teresa in her mission to bring down the Desai government.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, an exclusive club meant for the princes of the Catholic Church, is launching an action programme for a countrywide agitation against the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Act (FCRA Act 2026), which has been introduced in Parliament. The big shots of the Church are upset that the proposed legislation would clip their wings and prevent them from bringing in enormous amounts of cash from foreign sources for religious conversion and to arm terrorists fighting the civilian government.
The CBCI, the apex body of cardinals and bishops in the country, is known for its hatred towards Sanatana Dharma and its round-the-clock mission to finish off the Hindus once and for all. But they do it silently and without any publicity. Dog-whistling is a subject in which they are past masters. While NGOs not connected with the Church maintain silence over the FCRA Amendment 2026, it may be noted that only Christian spiritual leaders are crying “wolf” over the Bill. The arrest of five persons, including a foreigner, from Bangalore Airport has opened a Pandora’s box. The arrested persons were direct commanders of The Timothy Initiative, a North Carolina-headquartered organisation engaged in massive evangelisation in India. “A church in every village and a cross in every home” is the war cry of the TTI.
The Church has a global ecosystem through which it disseminates and propagates fake and fabricated news about “cruelties meted out to Christians, Muslims, and Dalits” by Hindus in India. This has been its modus operandi for decades. The ire of the cardinals and bishops over the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Act 2026 is a matter of interesting study, and it exposes their resentment and hatred towards the nation.
The first time India saw the might of the Church’s organised attack on the Constitution of the country was in 1959, and that too in Kerala. Known as the Liberation Struggle, the agitation was spearheaded by bishops, vicars, vergers, and nuns. It was against the high-handed behaviour of the Communist-led United Front government that had come to power in the 1957 Assembly election. E M S Namboodiripad was the Chief Minister, and he had in his Cabinet persons like V R Krishna Iyer (who later became a judge of the Supreme Court), Joseph Mundassery (writer, poet, and critic rolled into one), and C Achutha Menon, who later became Chief Minister after displacing Namboodiripad in 1969 and had a tenure of eight years (1969–1977), a rare feat in a state like Kerala.
There was a strong anti-Communist feeling among Christians across Kerala, as they were indoctrinated by the Church to somehow bring down the Namboodiripad government. The bishops were told by United States representatives in India that Communism was not good for India, especially for the Church, because Communists were anti-Christ. The anti-Communist feelings were fuelled by the writings and speeches of Senator Joseph McCarthy, a Republican leader famous for not mincing his words. McCarthy had warned the US government about Communists, liberals, and anarchists infiltrating the system, including the judiciary, with an eye on subverting democracy. Though the media and political observers had dismissed his warnings, popularly known as McCarthyism, later events proved that he was right on the dot.
It was to subvert the democratic process and oust the Namboodiripad government that the Church ganged up with the Congress and the Muslim League and staged the Liberation Struggle of 1959. The Church was also upset over the then-government’s move to curtail the free run it enjoyed in the education sector. A majority of the schools were owned by the Church, and they always got windfalls — from appointing staff to run the schools and from the monthly fees paid by students. While the Church charged exorbitant donations from candidates applying for the posts of teachers and non-teaching staff, the salaries and pensions were paid by the government. Mundassery, a Catholic, tried to rein in the Church, and this infuriated them. The Liberation Struggle turned into a major law-and-order issue in Kerala, and the police had to resort to firing at many places, claiming nearly 20 lives across the state. Finally, the Nehru government got the Namboodiripad ministry dismissed by making use of Article 356 of the Constitution. Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the Sree Sankara Bridge over the Periyar River, and the ties between the Communists and the Church have undergone many changes. Both have started loving each other’s potentialities. The Christians have realised that if they align with either the Communists or the Congress, their commercial and spiritual interests will be better served. Gone are the days when McCarthyism ruled the roost. In the US itself, McCarthyism has become “McCarthywasm”.
Now I would like to draw the attention of readers to the days of the 1959 Liberation Struggle. This agitation was funded, financed, and sponsored by the Vatican and the CIA of the United States. This is not a wild allegation. Lonappan Nampadan (1935–2013), a devout Catholic who was one of the leaders of the Liberation Struggle, wrote in his autobiography Sancharikkunna Viswasi that US dollars worth Rs.14,00,000 sent from the US and the Vatican were encashed in Kerala during January–July 1959. This was furnished by the then Finance Minister on 23 December 1959 in the Rajya Sabha as an answer to a query by C P Narayanan, a member representing Kerala.
The Liberation Struggle was financed to a great extent by the CIA, Nampadan writes in his memoirs. “This was stated by Elsworth Bunker, the then US Ambassador to India, in 1977. The same has been reiterated by another US diplomat, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, in his book A Dangerous Place. S K Patil, the then Union Minister for Agriculture, was the conduit for the transfer of money meant for the Liberation Struggle,” writes Nampadan. The author, who was at the forefront of the agitation, later switched his political allegiance from the Kerala Congress (a political outfit launched by the Church) to the CPI(M) and served twice as a minister in Kerala. He says that James Robert Knox, the Vatican’s ambassador to India, was present in Kerala, leading and guiding the bishops and priests in the operation.
The amount sent by the CIA and the Vatican came under the FCRA or the rules then in existence in India. The entire amount was spent on subversive activities to sabotage a democratically elected government and the Indian Constitution. The CIA’s track record in bringing down governments that were not favourable to it is well known. David Talbot, author and journalist, has given a vivid account of how and why many African and Latin American governments were brought down by the CIA. Patrice Lumumba, the President of Congo, was murdered by the CIA with the active connivance of the Vatican, writes Talbot in his famous book The Devil’s Chessboard.
It is intriguing to note that no organisations other than the Church have questioned or opposed the FCRA. There are genuine NGOs like Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation, Amritanandamayi Devi Ashram, Akshaya Patra, ISKCON, Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Art of Living, and the Sri Sankara Mutts working for the upliftment of the poor and needy in society. Their books are clean, and nobody has questioned their mission to save human lives. Akshaya Patra, which helps millions of children in India by providing them free mid-day meals without charging a single penny from others, is a symbol of selfless service.
It has been established beyond doubt that the Church has meddled in India’s internal security. Though the CBCI claims that its work is confined to social, educational, health, and spiritual sectors, and that its account books are clear and transparent, why do they begin to quiver whenever the term FCRA is discussed? There is a saying in Malayalam: “Kozhikattavante thalayil pooda kaanum,” the literal translation of which is “there would be feathers on the head of the person who stole the rooster.”
