Two injured people have been hospitalised as fire brigade, police and NDRF teams continue the rescue operation
At least two people were killed and several others were feared trapped after a landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area early Wednesday morning, burying parts of two to three houses under debris. Rescue operations are underway.
The landslide occurred around 3:48 am in the Chirag Nagar area, near Rathod Medical along the Ghatkopar-Kurla Road, after heavy rain lashed Mumbai.
Two bodies recovered, several feared trapped
Officials said two people have died in the incident, while four to five others are feared trapped beneath the rubble. Initial reports had suggested that five to six people could be trapped.
Rescue teams are working to locate those buried under the debris. A specialised victim-detection camera is also being used to search for signs of life beneath the rubble.
The bodies of the two deceased have been recovered and sent to a hospital for further procedures.
Two injured taken to hospital
Two people injured in the landslide have been admitted to hospital and are reported to be stable.
They have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury.
Fire brigade, police and NDRF involved
Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are involved in the rescue operation.
Authorities are continuing to clear the debris and search for those who may still be trapped. Mumbai civic officials, including Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakne, also visited the site to assess the situation.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of densely populated hillside settlements in Mumbai during the monsoon, when heavy rainfall can trigger landslides and slope collapses.
