Security agencies launched a coordinated multi-state crackdown recovering IEDs, Pakistan-marked grenades, weapons and surveillance equipment
Indian security agencies have dismantled the Pakistan-based, ISI-backed Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN) in a major crackdown launched ahead of Independence Day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), 253 people were detained across 14 states during coordinated operations on August 12 aimed at thwarting suspected plans to disrupt Independence Day events. More than 80 FIRs have been registered under laws including the UAPA, BNS, Arms Act, NDPS Act and Explosive Substances Act.
Shah said the operation had foiled the network’s plans for “subversive attacks” and described it as a strong demonstration of the Modi government’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
253 detained across 14 states
The crackdown covered a wide geographical spread. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of detentions at 62, followed by Haryana with 52, Delhi with 51 and Punjab with 44.
Rajasthan accounted for 15 detentions, while Maharashtra recorded eight and Uttarakhand five. Karnataka, Gujarat and Bihar each reported three detentions, while Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala recorded two each.
The operation was carried out using a real-time intelligence-sharing mechanism in coordination with state police forces, the MHA said.
IEDs, Pakistan-marked grenades recovered
Security agencies also made substantial recoveries during the crackdown, including improvised explosive devices, grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings, pistols and live ammunition.
CCTV cameras allegedly intended for espionage were also recovered, according to the government.
The MHA said the Shahzad Bhatti Network has been linked to grenade, IED and petrol-bomb attacks as well as targeted killings in different parts of India. The network allegedly used local operatives to conduct reconnaissance of police, defence and religious sites and install surveillance cameras.
Crackdown comes ahead of Independence Day
The timing of the operation was significant, with agencies moving against the network just days before India’s Independence Day celebrations.
Shah said the coordinated action across 14 states had prevented the network from executing its plans and demonstrated the security establishment’s preparedness to act against cross-border terror networks.
The latest crackdown also highlights the growing focus of Indian agencies on Pakistan-based handlers and their local networks, particularly their alleged use of social media, local recruits and surveillance to facilitate attacks.
The government has described the operation as a major blow to the Shahzad Bhatti Network and another example of its hardline approach towards Pakistan-backed terrorism.
