Abu Dhabi has accused accusing Iran of targeting UAE territory with ballistic missiles

The United Arab Emirates has suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice, sharply escalating tensions between the two Gulf neighbours amid the widening US-Iran conflict.

The UAE Foreign Ministry said the decision was taken in response to regional escalations that threaten peace and security in the region and beyond. The announcement followed an incident in which the UAE said two ballistic missiles were detected targeting its territory.

UAE officials said one of the missiles fell into the sea outside UAE waters while the other landed within UAE waters. The incident triggered an emergency alert warning residents about a potential missile threat.

    Iran denies targeting UAE

Tehran has rejected Abu Dhabi’s accusation, describing the claims as baseless. Iranian officials have suggested that the missile incident could be part of an attempt to further inflame tensions in the region.

The conflicting claims come against the backdrop of a rapidly deteriorating security situation around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

The UAE has in recent days accused Iran of targeting vessels operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported that the UAE had blamed Iran for attacks on multiple ADNOC-linked vessels, although Tehran has not accepted responsibility.

Major blow to UAE-Iran economic ties

The suspension represents a significant setback to economic relations between the two countries. Dubai’s ports have historically served as an important transit hub for Iranian trade, making the UAE a key commercial gateway for goods moving to and from Iran.

The latest decision could therefore affect shipping, trade, banking and cross-border commercial activity, particularly as maritime traffic through Hormuz remains severely disrupted.

The UAE government has stressed that its actions are linked to the escalating regional security situation, rather than presenting the move as a permanent break in diplomatic relations. The suspension remains in force until further notice.
