Reports say Tehran talks aim for a Saudi-Houthi ceasefire, though the reported USD 1 billion transfer is unconfirmed
India is closely watching a meeting in Tehran involving officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan and Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Wednesday. Responding to ANI, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi follows all significant geopolitical developments in the region that have a bearing on its interests.
According to reports, the Tehran talks are aimed at easing regional tensions and securing a ceasefire between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi group, with Iran facilitating the negotiations. The reports cite Israeli media and diplomatic sources. They also suggest Saudi Arabia offered the Houthis financial assistance to stop attacks on the kingdom, but the reported transfer of USD 1 billion has not been independently confirmed.
The meeting comes amid wider tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, with Tehran trying to present itself as a regional mediator.
Jaiswal was also asked about the Maldives’ growing closeness to Pakistan after President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Islamabad, where about 20 agreements were reportedly signed. He said India’s relationship with the Maldives is anchored in its Neighbourhood First policy and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, and that India sees the Maldives as an important partner. He added that New Delhi remains committed to friendly, mutually beneficial ties with Male while keeping a vigilant eye on developments that affect India’s national security interests.
On Pakistan, asked whether India might review its diplomatic approach, Jaiswal said the policy adopted after the Pulwama terror attack and the developments that followed “remains unchanged and firmly in place.” India has had no High Commissioner-level representation in Islamabad for nearly a decade, according to the report.
