Is Secretary of State Tillerson trying to cut Ivanka Trump down to size?

In what could be a new bone of contention between the President and his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, it is learnt that the Department of State (the equivalent of External Affairs Ministry in India) will not be sending a high-level delegation to this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit, being held in India next week.

Since almost five months have passed since this event and Tillerson is still the Secretary of State, does it mean that Trump’s days of You are fired! are coming to an end?

Ivanka Trump was invited by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, and this year’s theme is supporting women entrepreneurs. In the past, even Secretaries of State (e. g. John Kerry) have attended similar events but in this case, Tillerson appears to want to ensure that he does nothing that would boost the popularity of Ivanka Trump.

This may also have to do with Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump frequently stepping on the toes of Tillerson with regards to the US Foreign Policy. At this time. it is expected that the US Treasurer Jovita Carranza, USAID Administrator Mark Green and Neomi Rao, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs along with the US Ambassador to India will be joining the delegation in Hyderabad.

Prime Minister Modi may accordingly want to scale back the size of the Indian delegation too.

The discord between President Trump and Rex Tillerson appears to have started with Tillerson calling Trump a moron, according to an NBC report that went online on Oct 4, 2017.

According to this NBC report, “The tensions came to a head around the time President Donald Trump delivered a politicized speech in late July to the Boy Scouts of America, an organization Tillerson once led, the officials said.

Just days earlier, Tillerson had openly disparaged the president, referring to him as a “moron,” after a July 20 meeting at the Pentagon with members of Trump’s national security team and Cabinet officials, according to three officials familiar with the incident.”

Since almost five months have passed since this event and Tillerson is still the Secretary of State, does it mean that Trump’s days of You are fired! are coming to an end? Only time will tell.
