Subramanian Swamy’s security ensured“, says Centre to Delhi HC

After getting strictures from Delhi High Court on Monday, the Union Home Ministry on Thursday told the Court that adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy at his private residence considering that he is a ‘Z category‘ protectee. Taking note of the Central government’s submission, Justice Yashwant Varma closed the proceedings in the application filed by Swamy in which he claimed that in spite of an earlier assurance, the Centre was yet to make adequate security arrangements at his private accommodation. Swamy’s lawyers Jayant Mehta and Satya Sabharwal informed the Court that he will vacate the official residence on Saturday.

On Monday, Delhi High Court expressed displeasure and instructed the government to come up with a comprehensive affidavit on installing security parameters in Swamy’s private home in the Nizamuddin area in Delhi.[1]

Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, representing the Centre, said that security agencies are satisfied that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of Swamy, considering that he is a ‘Z category’ protectee. In pursuance of the court’s earlier direction, the Centre also filed an additional affidavit in the matter. Home Ministry said that as per the Y-Book, they have finished the process of installing security parameters.

Senior advocate Jayant Mehta, appearing for Swamy, also told the Court that vacant possession of the bungalow will be handed over to the authorities by Saturday. After the case was disposed of, Swamy Tweeted:

Swamy is a Z category protectee and got accommodation in December 2015 and continued at the same place when he became Rajya Sabha Member in April 2016. But when his Rajya Sabha tenure ended in April 2022, Urban Development Ministry asked to vacate the accommodation. Swamy approached Delhi High Court in September 2022 arguing for the continuation of the accommodation citing his Z-category security. Swamy’s security is handled by CRPF under Union Home Ministry.

However, the Central government opposed the plea arguing that even though the security perception towards Swamy had not been downgraded, there was no obligation on the government to provide accommodation to him along with security cover. The government also told the Court that Swamy had a house in Delhi where he could shift and that protection agencies would take all steps to ensure his safety there.

  1. Dr Swamy is a great leader and he is admired by millions for his opinion and service during emergencies He has nobecome angry and bitter as he was not given any cabinet post. He did not like arun jaitley and he has no good opinion about Mrs Raman also. He attacks bjp and leadership on many issues and helps the opposition. As a citizen and a leader, he has rights to criticize any body. But he must know that present govt and modi ji command respect and loyalty from millions of citizens. Hope dr swamy patches his differences with the party and do .not create major headaches to govt.
