Home minister claims illegal infiltrators are leaving voluntarily after change in Bengal government

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal has handed over 600 hectares of land to the Border Security Force within just seven days of assuming office to begin border fencing along the Bangladesh border.

Addressing an event in Gandhinagar, Shah said the move fulfilled a major electoral commitment made by the Bharatiya Janata Party and reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening border security and tackling illegal infiltration.

The home minister stated that the Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, also transferred 121 hectares of land in the strategically sensitive Chicken’s Neck corridor to the Government of India.

Shah credited the developments to the political change in the state and declared that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP’s influence had expanded across the entire Ganga belt.

The Union minister further claimed that illegal infiltrators have started returning voluntarily after the BJP government established detention centres in West Bengal.

Taking a sharp swipe at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Shah alleged that infiltration from Bangladesh had become a daily occurrence under the previous administration.

He claimed that the situation had now reversed, with undocumented immigrants choosing to leave on their own amid stricter enforcement measures.

According to Shah, the state government is willing to assist illegal immigrants who voluntarily return before the launch of a formal identification and deportation campaign.

He added that no legal action would be initiated against those who leave before the official crackdown begins.

The home minister reiterated the Centre’s commitment to identifying and deporting every illegal infiltrator across the country, signalling a tougher stance on border security and undocumented migration.

The remarks are likely to intensify the political battle over infiltration and citizenship issues in West Bengal, themes that have remained central to BJP’s political messaging in the state.
