Deadliest Taliban-linked attack in recent months hits military convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
At least 16 Pakistani soldiers were killed and over two dozen people, including civilians, were injured in a suicide attack on Saturday in North Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack was confirmed by local officials and police and was later claimed by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction of the Pakistani Taliban.
“A suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy,” a government official in the area said. He requested anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly. The casualty count rose from an earlier toll of 13 to 16 soldiers.
Children among the injured as blast destroys nearby homes
The powerful blast also damaged nearby civilian infrastructure. “The explosion caused the roofs of two houses to collapse, injuring six children,” a police officer stationed in North Waziristan said.
Authorities are still gathering more information from the site. Emergency response teams and military reinforcements were deployed to secure the area and assist in rescue operations.
Rising violence near Afghan border raises alarm
The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, known for its ties to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility through its suicide bombing wing. The attack reflects the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan’s northwestern border areas.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has accused Kabul of allowing anti-Pakistan militants to use its territory as a launchpad for attacks—an allegation Afghan authorities deny.
According to the tally, approximately 290 people, primarily security personnel, have been killed in militant attacks this year across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
Key priorities: Intelligence and border security
In light of escalating violence, experts say Pakistan must prioritize enhancing counter-terrorism intelligence and strengthening border surveillance to prevent cross-border militant activities.
