Despite securing bail, the Hindu monk’s release remains uncertain as multiple cases are still pending before different courts
Bangladesh’s High Court on Sunday granted bail to jailed Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in two criminal cases, offering him partial legal relief. However, the order is unlikely to result in his immediate release, as he continues to face four other pending cases, including charges of sedition and murder.
The two-judge bench approved Das’s bail petitions in cases related to alleged attempted murder, vandalism and obstruction of public officials while performing their duties, according to his lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya.
Release unlikely despite bail
Despite securing bail in the two cases, legal experts and both prosecution and defence lawyers said Das would remain in custody because of multiple other cases still pending before different courts.
Among them is a sedition case filed after his arrest in November 2024, along with a murder case linked to the death of a government prosecutor during protests that erupted in Chattogram following his detention.
Arrest sparked diplomatic concern
Das was arrested in November 2024 on charges of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag, a move that triggered widespread protests and heightened communal tensions in the country.
His arrest also drew a strong response from India, which expressed concern over the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh and urged the authorities in Dhaka to ensure their protection.
The developments came amid strained India-Bangladesh ties following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 and the subsequent political transition in the country.
Minority rights campaigner
Previously associated with ISKCON, Chinmoy Krishna Das currently serves as a spokesperson for the Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote, a Hindu organisation that organised several rallies demanding greater security and equal rights for minority communities after the political upheaval in Bangladesh.
His lawyers have repeatedly sought bail, arguing that he has remained incarcerated for an extended period despite suffering from health issues. Several of his earlier bail applications were either rejected or stayed by the courts.
The remaining cases against Das continue to be heard in different courts, leaving the timeline for his eventual release uncertain.
