Political tensions explode in West Bengal: The Arjun Singh attack
In yet another shocking display of lawlessness, the office-cum-residence of BJP leader Arjun Singh was violently attacked early Friday morning, raising serious concerns about the West Bengal government’s inability to maintain order. Singh reported that a mob threw stones, hurled bombs, and fired multiple gunshots at his property in Meghna More, with the assault occurring at approximately 8:30 a.m.
Singh, a former Lok Sabha MP, alleged that he sustained a splinter wound during the incident, which he characterized as an attack by “jihadis and goons” allegedly under the protection of Namit Singh, the son of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor and an accused in NIA cases. In a video shared on social media, Singh criticized the local police for standing by as the assailants brandished firearms openly, stating, “Around 15 bombs were thrown, and more than a dozen rounds were fired.”
Eyewitness accounts confirmed the chaos, describing smoke engulfing the area due to the bomb explosions. Despite the severity of the situation, an officer from the Jagatdal police station claimed there were no confirmed injuries and that senior officials were on the scene to investigate, a response that many see as inadequate given the circumstances.
Singh, who previously switched allegiance from the TMC to the BJP, has faced political setbacks, having lost to TMC’s Partha Bhowmick in the recent general elections. In an attempt to deflect blame, Jagatdal MLA Somnath Shyam alleged that Singh himself fired four rounds, suggesting that the former MP is scapegoating the TMC for his failures.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari condemned the attack, stating, “This morning, prominent goons associated with the ruling TMC attacked the home of senior BJP leader Arjun Singh. As usual, the police played the role of mute spectator and did little to deter the criminals.” He urged the West Bengal police to use the video evidence to identify and apprehend the attackers.
This incident underscores the deteriorating security situation in West Bengal, where political violence has become alarmingly common, and highlights the government’s failure to protect its citizens. The lack of decisive action from law enforcement raises critical questions about the ruling party’s commitment to public safety.
