CBI registers FIR against Sheikh Sufian, 18 others in the post-poll violence case

The CBI has registered an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Sufiyan and 18 others in connection with an alleged rape case that took place after the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Earlier, on Wednesday the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to TMC leader Sheikh Sufiyan in a case relating to the murder of a BJP supporter. Sufiyan is accused in the murder case of BJP worker Debabrata Maity. Maity was allegedly attacked by TMC workers on May 3, a day after the West Bengal Assembly poll results were announced. He succumbed to his injuries at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata on May 13.

Sufiyan was summoned by the CBI back in September 2021 in connection with his alleged involvement in the murder case of Maity.

Horrific details of gang rape including that of a minor girl had emerged after from West Bengal after the declaration of assembly poll results last year. Several women had moved the Supreme Court to seek SIT probe into incidents of violence and gang rape. In their pleas before the SC, women had narrated their horrific gang rape by members of the ruling TMC

Taking cognizance of the incidents, on May 25, 2021, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the West Bengal government, NHRC, NCPCR, NCW, and the Centre, on a similar plea regarding the violence in the state during and after the elections.

The Bengal government had on May 25 informed the court that a five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court had already taken cognizance of the issue, and was hearing the pleas for the SIT investigation. The state government has claimed that FIRs have been registered and arrests have been made in the cases.

The CBI earlier on Thursday had summoned another TMC leader, Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal in connection with its probe into a multi-crore cattle smuggling racket operating along the India-Bangladesh border, a source in the agency said.

On Wednesday, the central agency had summoned TMC MP and actor Deepak Adhikari, popularly known as Dev, in connection with the same probe. He has been asked to appear on February 15.
