High drama in J&K Assembly as BJP MLAs marshalled out amid Article 370 showdown

The Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Thursday marshalled out several legislators belonging to the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) after the floor of the house witnessed complete pandemonium over a resolution passed by the house seeking restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status on Wednesday.

Soon after the House was convened BJP leaders led by the leader of the opposition Sunil Sharma started raising slogans and termed the move as ‘unconstitutional‘.

Initially, provocation came from the treasury benches as some of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference legislators provoked them by raising slogans in support of the resolution. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah silently watched the proceedings along with his cabin colleagues.

Amid the din, lone AIP MLA Sheikh Khursheed, brother of AIP supremo and Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, took out a banner demanding the restoration of Articles 370 and 35-A and the release of political prisoners. He roamed freely in the well of the House. None of the members from the treasury benches nor the speaker objected to his unparliamentary behaviour.

As some of the BJP MLAs attempted to reach out to the AIP MLA to snatch the banner, the members of the watch and ward staff intervened leading to a scuffle on the floor of the house.

Amid the chaos, one of the BJP legislators successfully snatched the banner and handed it over to another colleague raising slogans standing on his feet. Peoples Conference chairman and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone along with PDP MLA Waheed ur Rehman Parra and some others clashed with BJP members to lay their hand over the banner. As the ruckus continued the speaker ordered the marshals to drag the unruly members from the house. He later adjourned the house for about 15 minutes.

The speaker resumed the proceedings after an adjournment of 15 minutes. Unrelenting BJP MLAs once again started shouting slogans in the house in support of their demand.

Sunil Sharma accused the ruling party of getting lakhs of people killed in the name of special status, which provoked the treasury benches. They stood up and started raising slogans, ‘Jis Kashmir ko khoon se seencha, woh Kashmir humara hai’.

Soon, the speaker ordered the marshalling out of the BJP MLAs.

Later, Sajad Lone accused the NC and BJP of playing a ‘fixed match’ by not letting anybody else speak. They were countered by the members sitting on the treasury benches in the house

As pandemonium prevailed the speaker adjourned the house till tomorrow.

Meanwhile, to corner the JKNC-led government, PDP Thursday brought a joint resolution seeking restoration of Article 370 and 35-A.

The joint resolution has been brought by MLA Pulwama, Waheed ur Rehman Parra, MLA Handwara, and Sajad Lone. MLA Kupwara Mir Muhammad Fayaz and MLA Langate Sheikh Khurshid.

The resolution was submitted to the speaker, a moment before the House was adjourned till tomorrow.

The resolution also demanded the reinstatement of all the special provisions and guarantees.

The resolution also stated that the House condemns the “unconstitutional and unilateral” abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A, along with the enactment of the J&K Reorganization Act 2019 by the Government of India.
