For 4th time in 4 months, China again blocks India-US move at the UN to blacklist Pakistan-based terrorist Shahid Mahmood

China blocked a proposal by India and the US at the United Nations to list Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Shahid Mahmood as a global terrorist. India and US had jointly moved the proposal to blacklist Mahmood under the 1267 Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee regime.

India has accused China of politicizing the fight against terrorism saying Beijing’s “double standards” on the issue had undermined the sanctity of the working methods of the UNSC sanctions committee.

This is the fourth instance in as many months that Beijing has blocked bids to blacklist terrorists at the world organization. China placed a hold on the proposal by India and the US to designate Mahmood as a global terrorist under the 1267 Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council.

The US Treasury Department designated Mahmood a global terrorist in December 2016. In September, it blocked the joint India-US proposal for banning LeT commander Sajid Mir, a most wanted terrorist and handler of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Mir has a bounty of $5 million placed on his head by the US for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Earlier in August, China put a hold on a proposal by the US and India at the United Nations to blacklist Abdul Rauf Azhar, the brother of Jaish-e Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and a senior leader of the Pakistan-based terror organization.

In June this year, China put a hold, at the last moment, on a joint proposal by India and the US to list Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki under the 1267 Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee.

  1. The very system of a country having a veto power itself is incorrect & flawed. Such system is non-existent in any of the democratic set-ups then why in United Nations ?
India is foolish to run & getting obsessed with Pakistan. Get strong that Pak gets scared & urinates on itself.
