DRDO unveils new generation of man-portable autonomous underwater vehicles
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed a new generation of man-portable autonomous underwater vehicles (MP-AUVs), the defence ministry announced on Friday.
Developed by DRDO’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, the advanced system is designed to significantly enhance India’s underwater surveillance and mine detection capabilities.
AI-enabled real-time detection
According to the defence ministry, the MP-AUV system comprises multiple autonomous underwater vehicles equipped with side scan sonar and underwater cameras as their primary payloads. These tools allow the platform to detect mine-like objects in real time during underwater missions.
Deep learning algorithms cut operator workload
The ministry further stated that the AUVs are integrated with deep learning-based target recognition algorithms that autonomously classify underwater threats. This reduces the operator’s workload and helps shorten mission duration.
The new generation MP-AUVs have been designed and developed by NSTL Visakhapatnam, a premier DRDO laboratory working on naval defence systems.
