Indian firms get access to DRDO missile technologies in major defence indigenisation push
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian industries for domestic production, in a major push to strengthen the country’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
The Ministry of Defence said the Transfer of Technology (ToT) will enable eligible Indian companies to manufacture DRDO-developed conventional missile systems, subject to applicable qualifications, certifications and regulatory requirements. The move is aimed at increasing the participation of domestic industries, including MSMEs, in the defence ecosystem and reducing India’s dependence on foreign suppliers.
Big push for indigenous missile manufacturing
The decision is being seen as a significant step towards the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in defence. By allowing Indian companies to take up production of DRDO-developed missile technologies, the initiative is expected to help move indigenous systems from research and development into larger-scale manufacturing.
The move comes amid heightened regional security concerns and a broader government push to expand India’s domestic defence industrial base. India has also recently imposed phased import restrictions on 405 defence items as part of efforts to boost indigenous production and reduce reliance on overseas suppliers.
