Top court rejects exemption plea, sets stage for hearing on Tejpal’s conviction
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal’s plea seeking exemption from surrender and directed him to surrender within two weeks in connection with the 2013 Goa rape case. The court also directed that his appeal against the conviction and 10-year prison sentence be listed for hearing on September 22.
The case relates to allegations of sexual assault against Tejpal by a former colleague in 2013. The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court had on August 6 overturned his 2021 acquittal and convicted him, sentencing him to 10 years in prison. Tejpal has challenged the conviction and sentence before the Supreme Court.
The Goa government has also approached the Supreme Court seeking enhancement of Tejpal’s sentence. During Tuesday’s proceedings, the court held that his appeal could not proceed without compliance with the requirement to surrender or obtain an exemption.
