Modi finds mention in Boris Johnson’s new memoir
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “changemaker” and credited him with significantly advancing India-UK relations in his new memoir, Unleashed. In the book, Johnson describes feeling Modi’s “curious astral energy” during their first meeting in London over a decade ago.
The memoir, characterized by the publisher as breaking the mold of traditional prime ministerial accounts, dedicates an entire chapter to the evolving relationship between India and the UK. Johnson recalls pivotal interactions with Modi, spanning from his tenure as Mayor of London to his time as Prime Minister.
Reflecting on their inaugural encounter in 2012 by the River Thames, Johnson vividly remembers how Modi engaged the crowd, exuding a captivating energy. He expresses confidence that under Modi’s leadership, the two nations could forge a robust free trade agreement and establish a lasting partnership as “friends and equals.”
Johnson also recounts the “tremendous success” of his first official visit to India in April 2022, starting in Ahmedabad and culminating in a visit to the Sabarmati Ashram. He describes this trip as uplifting, providing a much-needed “balm for the soul” amid the political turmoil he faced back home.
In discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Johnson notes that their joint statement expressed strong concern for the humanitarian situation. However, he also encouraged India to reassess its relationship with Russia. “I wondered if it was not time for a modulation, a rethink,” he writes, openly critiquing Russia’s military reliability.
Overall, Johnson’s memoir offers an intimate glimpse into the political dynamics between the two nations, emphasizing Modi’s pivotal role in shaping a promising future for India-UK relations.
