Blast at Ras Laffan industrial area triggers major fire at Barzan gas facility as authorities assess damage and search for missing workers
At least 54 people were injured and 18 others remained missing after a powerful explosion ripped through Qatar’s key natural gas export hub on Sunday night, according to officials.
The blast occurred at the Ras Laffan industrial area as workers were attempting to restart operations following disruptions caused by recent regional tensions and attacks on energy infrastructure.
Authorities said the explosion triggered a major fire at the Barzan gas supply facility, prompting an emergency response from rescue teams and firefighters. The incident comes as Qatar seeks to restore normal export operations after energy shipments were severely affected by instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

QatarEnergy confirmed that the explosion and subsequent fire broke out during efforts to resume operations at the facility. Emergency crews were deployed immediately to contain the blaze and assist affected workers.
While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, officials initially reported only a limited number of injuries. However, updated figures released by Qatar’s Interior Ministry later revealed that at least 54 people had been injured, while 18 others were still unaccounted for several hours after the incident.
The explosion has raised fresh concerns about the stability of global energy supplies, given Qatar’s position as one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast, while search and rescue operations continue at the site. Further details regarding the condition of the injured and the operational status of the facility are awaited.
Global energy markets are expected to closely monitor developments as Qatar assesses the impact of the incident on production and export capabilities.
