PM Modi reaches Bali to attend 17th G-20 Leaders’ Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he would hold extensive discussions with leaders of the G-20 grouping in Bali, Indonesia on challenges such as reviving global growth, ensuring food and energy security, and addressing issues relating to health and digital transformation. He reached Bali in the evening.
The G-20 summit is taking place in Bali on November 15-16 in the backdrop of the ongoing Ukraine conflict and its adverse impact on food, fertilizers, and food supply chains. The issue is likely to figure prominently during the high-profile event. Modi is expected to have bilateral meet US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron. But no confirmation from the Indian or Chinese sides on Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Bali.
US President Joe Biden on Monday met Chinese President Xi Jinping there for the first time since the Russian military action began in Ukraine in February. Moreover, this was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden became President and the rising tension between the two countries on issues like economy and security. Biden spoke to his Chinese counterpart on China-Taiwan tussles and is believed to have told him to desist from aggression on Taiwan. However, China-India border tussles were not part of the US-China heads of the states.
Xi and Biden shook hands with each other and the US President said the two leaders have a “responsibility” to show that their nations can “manage our differences” and identify areas of mutual cooperation. Xi said it was “good to see you” and hoped the pair would “elevate the relationship” and that he was prepared to have a “candid and in-depth exchange of views” with Biden.
Prime Minister Modi is likely to meet Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the two-day summit. India will assume the presidency of the G-20 from Indonesia on December one. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is among the other world leaders scheduled to participate in the summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin is not attending the meeting and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia.
In a pre-departure statement on Monday, Modi said he will also highlight India’s achievements and its “unwavering commitment” to collectively address global issues while noting that the country’s upcoming presidency of the G-20 will be grounded in the theme ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam‘ or ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
“Collectively addressing global challenges! Prime Minister Narendra Modi emplanes for Bali, Indonesia to participate in the 17th G-20 Leaders’ Summit,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted along with a photo of Modi emplaning for the Southeast Asian country. During the summit, the Prime Minister said he will also highlight India’s achievements and its “unwavering commitment” to collectively address global challenges.
The G-20 is an influential bloc for global economic cooperation as it represents around 85 percent of the global GDP, over 75 percent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. “India will officially assume the G-20 Presidency from 1st December 2022. I will also extend my personal invitation to G-20 members and other invitees to our G20 summit next year,” said Modi.
“During my interactions at the G-20 summit, I will highlight India’s achievements, and our unwavering commitment to collectively address global challenges,” Modi said.
