ALERT! Do you take Meftal Spas for cramps or arthritis? IPC warns of adverse reactions

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has issued an alert about an adverse reaction to painkiller Meftal, which can cause a diverse array of symptoms, from 2 to 8 weeks after initiating the drug.

The IPC has issued a drug safety alert advising healthcare professionals and patients to monitor adverse reactions of the painkiller Meftal, commonly used for menstrual cramps and rheumatoid arthritis.

Issuing alert, the commission said that a preliminary analysis of adverse drug reactions from the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) database revealed drug reactions with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome.

Meftal’s main composition is Mefenamic acid and it is a painkiller that is used to alleviate muscle and joint pain and period pain. It can also help with sore throats, nerve pain, and muscle aches. The mefenamic acid painkiller is prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhoea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain.

According to the alert, issued on November 30, “Healthcare professionals, patients/ consumers are advised to closely monitor the possibility of the above adverse drug reaction (ADR) associated with the use of the suspected drug.”

If such a reaction is encountered, the alert advised, people should report the matter to the national coordination centre of the PvPI under the commission by filing a form on the website – www.ipc.gov.in – or through the Android mobile app ADR PvPI and PvPI Helpline No. 1800-180-3024.

  1. Why alert – stop it being sold in pharmacy shop or stop it production & withdraw it from market.
there is no alert on blunders of Constitution, but no changes also for it is sacrosanct.
