Blasphemy: Accused man lynched by mob in Pakistan

Mob lynching over alleged blasphemy charges is not new in Pakistan. In yet another shocking incident from Khanewal district in Pakistan’s Punjab province, the mob tortured and killed a man accused of desecrating the Holy Quran.

The incident took place in Jungle Dera village where hundreds of locals gathered after Maghrib prayers following the announcement that a man had torn some pages of the Holy Quran and later set them on fire.

As per reports the local police, in order to prevent themselves, allegedly allowed the accused to leave the police station in Mian Chunnu, Khanewal district, where the mob was present.

The victim was dragged to a nearby place, tortured and killed, whereas the police allegedly played the role of silent spectator. With no one ready to listen to the suspect, who reportedly claimed innocence, the villagers first hanged him on a tree and then hit him with bricks, until he died.

In November last year, a mob had vandalized a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda district and set it on fire after authorities refused to hand over a man arrested earlier for allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran.

On December 3, 2021, in Sialkot, a Sri Lankan engineer was lynched by factory workers on blasphemy charges.

In yet another harrowing incident of mob justice, hundreds of people accused a ‘deranged’ man of sacrilege, mercilessly beat him, and burnt him alive in southern Punjab, Pakistan.

Earlier in July 2012, in the town of Chani Goth, Bahawalpur, in a horrifying incident, hundreds of people mercilessly beat a mentally challenged man after accusing him of sacrilege and set him on fire. The incident took place in the presence of police officials who were outnumbered and overpowered by hundreds of participants.

Also, last year witnessed a horrific incident in district Dadu, Sindh where reportedly hundreds of villagers lynched an accused suspected of desecrating the Holy Quran. The mob thrashed the accused to death before setting his corpse on fire after dragging him out of the police lock-up.
