Maharashtra MLC polls: BJP wins four of six seats
In a major jolt to the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, BJP won 4 seats out of 6 in the Maharashtra MLC polls.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi is an alliance comprising of Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP which was made to form government in Maharashtra.
The battle in Nagpur and Akola for the local body seats to Maharashtra Council has been won by BJP’s Chandrashekhar Bawankule & Vasant Khandelwal respectively.
This is a major boost to former CM Devendra Fadnavis & a huge setback to Congress state chief Nana Patole, as they both battle it out for supremacy over their home-turf Vidharbha region.
The Congress candidate declared by Patole refused to file nomination & the party had to support an independent. In Akola 4 term Shivsena MLC Gopichand Bajoria had a shocking 100+ vote defeat, lacking coordination between Shivsena & Congress.
While BJP’s Rajhans Singh and Amrish Patel were elected unopposed.
Chandrashekhar Bawankule secured 362 votes against 186 votes of Mangesh Deshmukh. In Akola-Buldhana-Washim, BJP’s Vasant Khandelwal beat Shiv Sena’s Gopikishan Bajoria by 109 votes.
Besides, the BJP bagged one seat in Mumbai, BJP also netted Dhule seat and Congress secured Kolhapur, all four unopposed owing to local-level political understandings in the biennial polls.
Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis remarked on this win, “Today, I am very happy that my associate Chandrashekhar Bawankule has secured a big win. In fact, I am feeling happier at the victory of Chandrashekhar Bawankule than my own election victory. This victory is a slap on MVA. Similarly, Vasant Khandelwal in Akola has won a decisive victory there. If you see the MLC polls, BJP has won 4 out of 6 seats. This win has proven wrong the calculation that MVA, i.e three parties coming together will win any kind of contest. The people of Maharashtra are with BJP and we will continue to get their blessings in the future too.”
