The national flag will be flown at half-mast and there will be no official entertainment

India has declared one dayof state mourning on May 21 as a mark of respect to Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

“On the day of mourning (Tuesday), the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day,” read a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

President Raisi, Foreign Minister Abdollahian, and other officials died after their helicopter crashed in Iran’s mountainous north-west region while they were returning from the Azerbaijan border after flagging off joint projects in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday condoled the demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and said that India is with Iran in the time of sorrow.

Expressing shock at the demise of the Iranian leader, PM Modi said his contribution to strengthening ties between the two nations will always be remembered.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening the India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”

The EAM posted: “Deeply shocked to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President Dr Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash.

EAM Jaishankar recalled many meetings with the Raisi, most recently in January.

“Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran at the time of this tragedy,” he said.

  1. Declaration of state mourning on 21st is a good gesture, our relations with Iran have to have to be under constant watch. Iran under sanctions is different, if the sanctions are lifted, we could see a very arrogant Iran as a theocratic state or otherwise.
