PM Modi remembers victims, stands with grieving families

On the first anniversary of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reiterated India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, asserting that the country will never bow to such threats.

The attack, carried out on April 22, 2025, by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pahalgam, claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 tourists from across India and a local pony handler.

Tribute to victims and solidarity with families

Remembering the victims, the Prime Minister said the lives lost in the “gruesome” attack would never be forgotten.

“Remembering the innocent lives lost in the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack on this day last year. They will never be forgotten,” Modi said in a post on X.

He added that his thoughts remain with the bereaved families as they continue to cope with the loss.

“As a nation, we stand united in grief and resolve. India will never bow to any form of terror. The heinous designs of terrorists will never succeed,” he said.

    Indian Army reaffirms resolve

Ahead of the anniversary, the Indian Army also issued a strong message, underlining the country’s determination to respond firmly to acts of terror.

“When the boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is served. India stands united,” the Army said in a post on X.

    Attack that shook the nation

The attack took place at Baisaran meadow in the Anantnag district, a popular tourist destination often referred to as “Mini Switzerland.”

The targeting of civilians, especially tourists, triggered nationwide outrage and raised serious concerns over security in the region.

Tourism hit, key sites remain closed

In the immediate aftermath, authorities shut down around 44 tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir as a precaution.

While most sites have since reopened, Baisaran remains closed. Another key tourist location, Chandanwari, also continues to remain shut, with no official timeline announced for reopening.

    Operation Sindoor: India’s response

Following the attack, India launched a retaliatory military operation named Operation Sindoor, targeting terror and military infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The operation marked a significant escalation in India’s response to cross-border terrorism, signalling a firm and decisive stance.
