Most Indian people do not know how to use western-style toilets
There are many articles available online highlighting the benefits of using Indian toilets, but unfortunately, urban planners have bridled their eyes and spent lavishly installing western toilets in public places.
I can confidently say that most Indian people do not know how to use western-style toilets. It is very awkward for a common adult to ask someone how to use it, so he just does the best he can. It becomes even more awkward when it’s a unisex toilet on a train.
There is an assumed knowledge that the common man in India prefers the western toilet, western toilet ideal should be available for senior citizens, for people who have leg or knee ailments, or people who should not strain like those with heart ailments. Otherwise, a healthy individual should be provided with an Indian toilet for a healthier future.
Swachbharat Abhiyaan should ensure public toilets have both options, predominantly Indian where there is a complex with multiple lavatories, Swachbharat with Fit India Movement should promote Indian toilets as much as possible.
Indian toilet is easy to use and clean. Citizens are aware of how to use it, and this awareness will help in keeping the public toilets cleaner. This will also help reduce the unwarranted spread of disease to those who are using it.
