Indian Navy inducts INS Visakhapatnam

Reaffirming India’s presence amongst an elite group of nations with the capability to design and build advanced warships, the INS Visakhapatnam commissions into the Indian Navy. INS Visakhapatnam is the first stealth-guided missile destroyer ship of Project 15B.

In a major boost to the Indian Navy, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday inducted INS Visakhapatnam into the force at the Western Naval Command in Mumbai.

On the occasion, Rajnath Singh said that the commissioning of INS Visakhapatnam will fulfill the capabilities of the Indian Navy to a great capacity. “I was told that this lethal warship, built by MDSL, is 75% in terms of content, and completely indigenous in terms of design. Our ‘self-reliance‘ in the field of shipbuilding, was once a major reason for our recognition all over the world,” he said.

“The carrier will increase our reach from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. Its commissioning will be a golden moment in the history of the Indian Defence. It will be the best occasion to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence and the 50th anniversary of India’s victory in the 1971 war,” he said.

INS Visakhapatnam has been constructed using indigenous steel DMR 249A and is amongst the largest destroyers constructed in India with an overall length of 163m and displacement of over 7,400 tons. The ship boasts of a very high level of automation with sophisticated digital networks, a Combat Management System, and an Integrated Platform Management System.

The commissioning ceremonies coincided with the ”Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” and ”Swarnim Vijay Varsh” celebrations.

The Indian Navy said, “The inductions of the ships thus not only enhance our defence preparedness but are also our humble tribute to the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters for the independence of the nation and our brave soldiers during the 1971 war.”

The state-of-the-art ship, equipped with the latest systems and weapons, will strengthen maritime security and protect the interests of the nation. The development of Indigenous Aircraft Carrier ‘INS Vikrant’ is an important milestone in their path to achieving ‘Atmanirbharta’.
