Wave of airstrikes near Tehran claims top military figure as tensions sharply escalate

Majid Khademi, head of intelligence for Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, has been killed in US-Israeli airstrikes, according to statements from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The IRGC said Khademi was “martyred” in what it described as a “criminal terrorist attack by the American-Zionist enemy,” though it did not specify the exact location. The announcement came as multiple airstrikes targeted areas around Tehran early Monday.

Successor to slain predecessor

Khademi had recently taken over the intelligence role following the killing of his predecessor, Mohammad Kazemi, during earlier hostilities.

In its statement, the IRGC praised Khademi’s decades-long service, calling his contributions to Iran’s intelligence and security apparatus “enduring” and “instructive.”

Strikes hit key locations in Tehran

Explosions were reported across Tehran, with thick smoke rising near Azadi Square after one strike reportedly hit near the Sharif University of Technology.

The latest round of US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed more than 25 people. In response, Iran launched missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf region locations, further escalating the conflict.

The strikes come amid mounting pressure from Donald Trump, who has warned Tehran to meet demands related to the Strait of Hormuz or face intensified action.

Senior leadership losses mount

Khademi’s death adds to a growing list of senior Iranian military and political figures killed in recent weeks, including Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani and IRGC spokesperson Ali Mohammad Naini.

The sustained targeting of high-ranking officials signals a significant escalation, with analysts warning of broader regional fallout as the conflict deepens.
