The arrest of a mosque cleric in Kishtwar marks the latest breakthrough in J&K Police’s investigation into alleged support networks for Pakistan-backed terrorists
In a significant operation targeting the support network behind terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, police have arrested a mosque cleric accused of providing shelter and logistical assistance to Pakistan-backed terrorists operating in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Rafiq Naik, allegedly served as a key overground facilitator for a terror module led by Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Saifullah. According to investigators, Naik used his local network to provide food, shelter, supplies and coordination, enabling the terrorists to remain active in the forests of Chatroo for nearly two years.
Police said the terror group headed by Saifullah was neutralised earlier this year, but investigations revealed that an organised support network had sustained the militants during their operations. Authorities allege Naik played a central role in that network.
The arrest forms part of an ongoing investigation aimed at dismantling the overground worker (OGW) ecosystem that allegedly assists foreign terrorists in the region. Earlier, police had arrested two other suspects, including a school teacher, for allegedly providing logistical and communication support to the same terror module.
Security agencies said the investigation is continuing on multiple fronts to identify additional individuals who may have assisted the terrorists. Officials maintained that anyone found providing material support to terrorist organisations would face legal action, irrespective of their position or profession.
The latest arrest comes amid sustained counter-terrorism operations in Jammu’s hinterland as security forces intensify efforts to dismantle both militant groups and the civilian networks allegedly supporting them.
