Doctors in Maharashtra may suspend hospital services as the IMA intensifies its protest over repeated assaults on medical professionals
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a stern warning to the Maharashtra government, saying hospitals across the state could suspend medical services if authorities fail to take decisive action against the growing number of attacks on doctors.
The warning follows a recent incident in which doctors were allegedly assaulted while on duty, triggering outrage within the medical fraternity. The IMA said repeated instances of violence against healthcare professionals have created an atmosphere of fear, making it increasingly difficult for doctors to perform their duties safely.
Calling the latest attack “deeply disturbing“, the association demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible and strict enforcement of laws protecting healthcare workers. It also urged the government to strengthen hospital security and ensure that medical personnel are not left vulnerable while treating patients.
The IMA cautioned that if concrete action is not taken, doctors across Maharashtra may be forced to suspend non-emergency medical services as part of a statewide protest. Emergency and critical care services are expected to continue, but routine consultations and elective procedures could be affected.
Medical professionals argued that assaults on doctors not only endanger healthcare workers but also disrupt patient care and place additional strain on an already stretched healthcare system. They stressed that violence inside hospitals has become a recurring issue that requires systemic solutions rather than temporary responses.
The association has appealed to the state government to engage with medical representatives and implement stronger measures to deter attacks on healthcare workers. It warned that unless doctors feel secure in their workplaces, such incidents will continue to undermine public healthcare delivery.
