Usha Chilukuri Vance: The India-origin woman behind JD Vance, Trump’s new running mate

Indian media is abuzz with details of Usha Chilukuri Vance after Donald Trump on Monday declared her husband J D Vance as Vice President candidate. A litigator at a national firm, Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and has an impressive academic background. She was born in San Diego, California in 1986, to Telugu-speaking Indian immigrants Radhakrishna Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri, both professors. Her parents are from the Brahmin community, and hail from Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. Her parents belong to Chilkur village in Godavari District.

Usha (38) holds an impressive educational background, having graduated from top-notch American institutes. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from Yale University and then pursued a Master’s in Philosophy from Cambridge University. She also has a track record of a distinguished career, with professional engagements across multiple segments. She clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Usha and J D Vance (39) met at the Yale Law School and it was there that they developed a close affinity for each other. They got married in Kentucky in 2014 and have two sons – Ewan (6), and Vivek (4) – and a daughter Mirabel (2).

Usha’s academic achievements include serving as Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and Executive Development Editor of The Yale Law Journal. Usha Vance has played a subtle yet significant role in her husband’s success. She assisted Vance in organizing his thoughts on the social decline in rural white America, which inspired his best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which was adapted into a film directed by Ron Howard in 2020.
