For those who have conquered the mind, it is their friend. For those who have failed to do so, the mind works as an enemy.

As it is a well-known fact that, all Shastras focus on the control of the mind since it is the source of thought, word, and deed. It is said that if a person cannot manage himself, he cannot manage others, not to speak of the world.

Bhagavad Gita is the most prominent ancient Indian script which talks about all the aspects of the mental health of human beings. The Gita has nothing to do with religion, it is a book guiding us through our life journey. The main aims of Mental Health Education are to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities through excellence in teaching, research, and extension. Bhagavad Gita highlights various ways to avoid negative thinking, right knowledge, selflessness, faithful, high consciousness, learn & live, blessings, accept the truth, detach from materialistic pleasure, lifestyle, goodness, the true power, and so on.

Isn’t it exactly like what modern science says while dealing with mental health? Today we have various ways and means to deal with our mental well-being.

Stress is often unavoidable, but knowing what triggers your stress and knowing how to cope is key in maintaining good mental health. Managing your responsibilities and worries by making a list or a schedule of when you can resolve each issue. Often if you break down your worries and stresses and write them down, you realize that they are manageable. Try to avoid burying your head in the sand, and tackle problems face on. If you find you are having trouble sleeping, or are waking up thinking about all of the things that are stressing you out, write them down and reassure yourself that you can deal with them in the morning.

You can take steps to be mentally healthier, and there are resources and support to help with this. Getting help for mental illness is just as important as getting help for physical illness.

Here are some handy tips for a healthy mind:

  • Exercise Regularly Just 30 minutes of walk/exercise every day can help boost your mood and improve your health.
  • Eat healthily and stay hydrated. A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus throughout the day. Also, limit caffeinated beverages such as soft drinks or coffee.
  • Adequate Sleep. Ensure 8 hours of sleep daily. Also, follow the early to sleep, early to rise rule.
  • Focus on positivity. Identify and challenge your negative and unhelpful thoughts.
  • Stay connected. Reach out to your friends or family members who can provide emotional support and practical help.
  • Try a relaxing activity. Explore relaxation or wellness programs or apps, which may incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. Schedule regular times for these and other healthy activities you enjoy such as journaling.

Self-care looks different for everyone, and it is important to find what you need and enjoy. It may take trial and error to discover what works best for you. In addition, although self-care is not a cure for mental illnesses, understanding what causes or triggers your mild symptoms and what coping techniques work for you can help manage your mental health.
