Canada shaken by deadly school shooting in British Columbia
At least 10 people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and around two dozen others injured after a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the Canadian province of British Columbia on Wednesday, according to CTV News.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the school at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time.
“As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat,” the B.C. RCMP said in a statement. “During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.”
Authorities said around 24 people were hospitalized with injuries, though the severity of their conditions has not been disclosed.
In an update issued shortly after 3:15 p.m., police said the suspect was believed to be deceased but added that investigators were still working to determine whether a second suspect may have been involved and to confirm the total number of victims.
“All remaining students and staff have been safely evacuated,” police said, adding that efforts are underway to reunite students with their families.
An emergency alert sent to residents in and around Tumbler Ridge described the suspect as “a female in a dress with brown hair.” Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and avoid the area while police secured the scene.
“Those in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside, lock your doors, and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time,” police said. “All others need to avoid the area and follow police directions and restrictions.”
Police said further updates would be provided once details regarding the victims, motive, and circumstances of the shooting are confirmed.
