Who is terrorist Zargar alias Latram, whose property has been seized by NIA?

The residential property belonging to the family of Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, a Pakistan-based dreaded terrorist was attached by the sleuths of the premiere National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Srinagar on Thursday.

The property was attached almost a year after the founder and chief commander of the terror group Al-Umar-Mujahideen was designated as a terrorist by the Union government.

Local residents in Srinagar’s downtown residential colony remembered him as a skinny boy from the Nowhatta locality. He was shot into the limelight after he was released along with Maulana Masood Azhar and Omar Sheikh in lieu of hijacked passengers of an IC-814 Indian Airlines flight in 1991.

Earlier, he was arrested on May 15, 1992.

Zargar was also involved in the kidnapping of former Union home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s daughter, Rubaiya Sayeed, in 1989.

According to a statement, “Zargar’s two-marla house (Khasra No. 182) at Ganai Mohalla, Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta, Srinagar, has been attached under the provisions of UA(P)A. The procedure was carried out by a team of NIA along with the representative of district administration and local police”.

Zargar is a ‘Designated Individual Terrorist’ under the UA(P)A and has been operating from Pakistan since his release and funding terror activities in the valley,” an NIA spokesperson said.

Zargar was earlier associated with the Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and was responsible for several terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also been involved in other heinous crimes, including murders, and has a close association with other terror outfits such as Al-Qaeda and JeM,” the spokesperson said.

Before targeting security forces and civilians in the Kashmir valley Zargar had gone to Pakistan for illegal arms training.

According to the Union Home Ministry Zargar, a designated terrorist, has been running an incessant campaign from Pakistan to fuel terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

He has been involved in various terror crimes including murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, planning, execution of terrorist attacks, and terror funding, it noted.

The Home Ministry had also stated that Zargar is a threat to peace, not only to India but across the world, with his contacts and proximity to radical terrorist groups like the Al-Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Central government believes that Zargar alias Latram is involved in terrorism and he is to be notified as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
