The AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu could fall down any time because of its own weight

An all-out effort by the group owing allegiance to Edappadi Palaniswamy, the chief minister, to ensure the presence of all the 134 MLAs in the AIADMK in Tuesday’s legislature party meeting came a cropper as only 111 legislatures turned out for the crucial meeting held at the party headquarters in Chennai.

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar, official spokesman of the newly formed AIADMK (Amma, PTA) out of the merger between the EPS and OPS camps, claimed after the legislature party meeting that 111 MLAs took part in the proceedings. Even if it is correct, the chief minister is seven short of absolute majority in the House which has an effective strength of 234 members.

Palaniswamy should quit at the earliest and party secretary VK Sasikala should nominate a new chief minister, preferably P Dhanapal, the Speaker of the House”

The demise of Jayalalithaa has left the AIADMK with 135 seats. But if the claim by TTV Dinakaran camp is to be believed, 21 AIADMK MLAs are against the Chief Minister. That leaves him with 113 seats. The DMK-led Opposition has 98 MLAs. Since DMK patriarch Karunanidhi may not be able to make to the House due to failing health, the DMK camp is left with only 97 MLAs. But the AIADMK should have an effective strength of 118 MLAs in the House to counter any trust vote coming against it in future.

Jayakumar said the meeting passed a unanimous resolution reposing faith in the leadership of chief minister Palaniswamy. “Many MLAs from the 21 MLAs belonging to the Dinakaran camp had telephonically informed the chief minister that they would stand by the latter in the event of any floor test,” said Jayakumar.

“The Palaniswamy government has lost the majority in the House. It is a minority government which has no moral right to continue even for one day. Palaniswamy should quit at the earliest and party secretary VK Sasikala should nominate a new chief minister, preferably P Dhanapal, the Speaker of the House,” said Dr Subramanian Swamy, MP and senior BJP leader reacting to Tuesday’s development.

Since the AIADMK government is always moving from one crisis to other, the General Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday is the next Agni Pareeksha for Palaniswamy

But S Semmalai, MLA and senior AIADMK leader who was present at the meeting said there was no threat to the Palaniswamy government. “TTV Dinakaran is a senior leader of the AIADMK and he will not do anything detrimental to the government. The governor to whom the 19 MLAs submitted their letters stating that they were against Chief Minister Palaniswamy had made it clear that they do not have anything against the government,” said Semmalali, a close confidante of both late MGR and Jayalalithaa.

He said even the DMK would not dare to bring in a no-confidence motion against the government as Stalin knows very well that there was no threat to the government. “As on today, there is no threat to the AIADMK government”, said Semmalai. It seems Palaniswamy government, which is on a life support system provided by the BJP government at the Centre may sail through for some more time. But the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu could fall down any time because of its own weight and internal contradictions.

Next Tuesday could be the D Day for Palaniswamy government. The AIADMK general council has been scheduled for next Tuesday (September 12) for easing out Sasikala from the post of general secretary. Since the AIADMK government is always moving from one crisis to other, the General Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday is the next Agni Pareeksha for Palaniswamy. Till then he may pull along.

  1. ADMK and DMK both are good for nothing personality parties which hold democracy to ransom. That Sasikala camp is a looting mafia is well known. Also well known is the fact that Karunanidhi used to harbor secessionist ideas to join hands with LTTE and secede TN from India and his party is never to be trusted. In the current scenario if an election is held in TN, it may favor Stalin and that by default congress. All of the so called ADMK leaders including EPS and OPS are regional leaders who at the maximum may have influence over 15-20 seats in couple of districts and are not necessarily bad people. It is also true that ADMK is the most ideologically aligned with BJP and they have no hope of winning any election in the future without Amma. In this situation our hope lies with PM Modi and Amit Shah to somehow cut the influence of Sasikala camp and save Edappadi’s government for as long as a favorable moment may come when all of ADMK except Sasikala camp can be merged with BJP and this merged entity with PM Modi’s face and chanakya Amit Shah’s electoral planning brilliance should counter the evil intentions of DMK and congress.

I am great admirer of Sub Swamy for the yeoman service he has rendered to this country on anti corruption cause and of late to hindu renaissance (in the form of VHS) and Ram Janmabhoomi. He may be entitled to his own views but it is puzzling how he is contradicting his anti corruption stance by speaking repeatedly in favor of Sasikala who is in jail for corruption and whose entire family is publicly hated in TN as evil and it is natural that it arouses suspicion in the minds of his well wishers and even diminish the respect they have for him. It can be argued that Swamy is nearly 80 and doesn’t have much of political future is a lone gun who doesn’t care about political costs of his statements but all of us who want congress mukt bharat do and there is no way italian sonia and her pappu son should get any sort of lifeline in 2019 to make this a reality. It would be politically expedient on the part of BJP to distance itself from Swamy’s statement and go with public sentiment.

  2. Subramanya Swamy has no integrity. He was the one who said that BJP will not get even 100 seats in UP election in 2017. And he changed his view unashamedly as soon as BJP posted a Huge Tally. Now he is siding with Sasikala & Co.And you are going gaga on his comment.Pl understand Su Swamy. He has a very low IQ.Are you shocked?Yes but this is Integrity Quotient

    • Everyone is entitled to his/ her opinion. He is saying that if ADMK does not unite behind a leader, DMK will swoop in and form a government. In his view that is a worse scenario. You may want something else and you are entitled to it… Why do you attack a person when you should be looking at his views/ stand?
