Citizens urged to adopt remote work and curb luxury spending to protect national reserves

As escalating hostilities in the Middle East place unprecedented pressure on global supply chains and the oil market, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on the nation to adopt “COVID-era measures” to safeguard the Indian economy.

Speaking in Hyderabad on Sunday, the Prime Minister framed economic discipline as a modern act of service, stating that patriotism today is defined by living responsibly and fulfilling daily duties to the nation.

Strategies for Energy and Resource Conservation

To combat rising fuel prices and global disruptions, the Prime Minister urged a significant reduction in petrol and diesel consumption. He recommended several practical shifts for citizens and businesses:

    • Commuting: Prioritizing metros, public transport, and car-pooling.
    • Logistics: Shifting the transportation of goods to the railway network.
    • Digital Adoption: Reviving Work From Home (WFH) protocols, online conferences, and virtual meetings to maximize efficiency.
    • Green Energy: Accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and solar-powered irrigation for farmers.

    Protection of Foreign Exchange Reserves

A major pillar of the Prime Minister’s appeal focused on the “Vocal for Local” movement to prevent the outflow of foreign exchange. He specifically requested that families postpone non-essential gold purchases for one year and reconsider “foreign weddings” in favor of domestic celebrations.

“Avoid overseas vacations and choose domestic tourism,” PM Modi urged, while also asking citizens to prioritize Made-in-India products for daily essentials like bags and footwear.

    Agricultural and Health Adjustments

The Prime Minister’s call for austerity extended to the kitchen and the farm. He advised a reduction in edible oil consumption, citing both economic and personal health benefits. Furthermore, he challenged the farming community to cut the usage of chemical fertilizers by 50%, emphasizing a shift toward sustainable agricultural practices to weather the international conflict’s impact on supply costs.
