Andhra CM’s sister Sharmila in talks to merge her party with Congress
Priyanka Gandhi recently held a telephone conversation with Y S Sharmila, daughter of the late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy. Additionally, she is also the estranged sister of Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy. Sharmila launched her party Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party two years ago and is learned to be in talks with Congress for a merger that could happen soon, given that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will face Assembly polls in less than a year.
Sources said Congress wants Sharmila to focus on Andhra Pradesh, the home turf of her late father and former CM of united Andhra Pradesh Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. At the same time, her party primarily operates in Telangana and she could be reluctant to take on her brother.
A Congress insider said YSR stood for united Andhra Pradesh and that sentiment could go against Sharmila in Telangana where she may be seen as an “outsider”. Also, after its victory in Karnataka, the resurgent Congress’s Telangana leaders may hesitate to offer Sharmila a role immediately. However, in Andhra Pradesh, Congress is on a much weaker wicket after YSRCP took away most of the party and it could look to rebuild the organization with a part of YSR’s legacy, that comes with Sharmila. Political watchers said there could be some clarity on this issue on YSR’s birth anniversary on July 8.
