‘Assam Baibhav Award’ to Ratan Tata
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of ‘Asom Divas‘ (Assam Day), announced to confer the ‘Assam Baibhav Award‘ – the state’s highest civilian award, upon industrialist Ratan Tata.
The Tata Trust, in collaboration with the state, had decided to set up 19 cancer care units in 2018. Ratan Tata had laid the foundation stone for the cancer care units in the state
In 2018, former BJP president Amit Shah and Tata attended the foundation laying ceremony for the 19 cancer specialty centers, The objective behind the centers was to drastically improve cancer care in the entire region as well as the state. Furthermore, the special units were set up as a joint venture, with the total investment being estimated at Rs.2,200 crore. Out of the total amount, half would be contributed by the Tata group companies and the remaining amount by the state government.
Sarma told the media persons in the national capital that Ratan Tata has made enormous contributions towards the cancer treatment in Assam.
Chief Minister Sarma took to Twitter to announce the news. He tweeted, “Delighted to announce that the Government of Assam has decided to confer its highest civilian award, Assam Baibhav, to Ratan Tata, Chairman Tata Trusts for his exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam.”

An Assam government official said that the board of trustees of Tata Trust had earlier informed the state government that it has approved Rs.540 crore for setting up a 3-level cancer care grid in the state and the district levels.
Asom Divas or Assam Day is celebrated on December 2 to commemorate the rule of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha — the first Ahom King and one of the architects of Assam.
