Security grid on tenterhooks, keeping a tight vigil on their activities

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]E[/dropcap]ver since the issue of settlement of Rohingya muslims in and around Jammu has been hogging headlines the security grid is secretly keeping a tight watch on their activities to prevent any anti national element from taking undue advantage of their proximity to several vital installations in the region.

At present the biggest worry on the mind of senior security officers is misuse of vulnerable and unemployed Rohingya muslims by the anti national elements to trigger unrest in the region.

Majority of these Rohingya muslims have set up their temporary camps near vital security installations especially army camps in Jammu city.

Their camps are located in the close proximity of Sunjwan army station, Transit camps in Jammu and Balidhan Stambh. Jammu university campus, religious shrines are also located in the area where a sizeble population of these refugees have been staying for over one decade.

In the absence of frequent patrolling by the local police authorities in the area these areas have become den of petty criminals and anti social elements.

Sympathetic local governments in the state either kept their eyes shut in the past or deliberately ignored the threat posed by mushrooming growth of these Rohingya muslims in the state.

At present the biggest worry on the mind of senior security officers is misuse of vulnerable and unemployed Rohingya muslims by the anti national elements to trigger unrest in the region.

A retired police officer who has been tracking the pattern of migration of these Rohingya muslims in the state revealed, “all those people who claim and project the issue of settlement of Rohingya muslims as a humanitarian issue fail to justify how and who actually sheltered them and brought them to Jammu from West Bengal”.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]T[/dropcap]he security officer smelling a conspiracy elaborated, “the prime objective would have been sheltering them in the muslim majority state to protect their lives and allow them to earn their livelihood by remaining anonymous. While doing so they preferred to settle them in Jammu area and not Kashmir for fear of getting caught on the wrong foot.”

In the past a Rohingya muslim was shot dead by security forces in Kashmir valley during fierce encounter with militants in October 2015.

Huge presence of army and other security personnel at every nook and corner would have created road blocks for these refugees in the Kashmir valley hence their sympathisers tactfully chose to relocate them in Jammu area.

According to the data shared by the state Home department in the recently concluded Budget session of the state assembly, “a total number of 17 FIRs have been registered against 38 Rohingyas for various offences in the state”.

According to local police in the absence of any comprehensive data base and details of their antecedents it is even difficult for the police authorities to give them clean chit without completing preliminary inquiries.

It is in the back drop of these developments even the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had sought report from Jammu and Kashmir Government on illegal settlement of Rohingyas and Burmese in Jammu region.

According to official sources Union Home Minister had sought complete details of exact number of Rohingyas and Burmese nationals settled in Jammu, the time period from which they were living here, reasons for their settlement and all other related issues.

The central security agencies are expected to act further after receiving detailed report from the State Government on settlement of foreigners in Jammu.

“There were very specific Intelligence inputs that Rohingyas and Burmese, settled on outskirts of Jammu, could become security risk as anti-national elements were out to exploit them”, a senior serving police officer revealed requesting anonymity.

The Union Home Minister has also directed the State Government to list the measured adopted to check any further flow of Rohingyas in Jammu and to ensure that they don’t fall into the hands of militants and anti-national elements.
