Supreme Court issues notice to Pawan Khera

Pawan Khera faced a setback on Wednesday after the Supreme Court of India stayed a Telangana High Court order granting him one-week transit anticipatory bail.

The case relates to allegations made by Khera against Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar issued notice to Khera, seeking his response within three weeks on a plea filed by the Assam Police challenging the bail order.

The court clarified that Khera is free to approach a competent court in Assam to seek anticipatory bail.

    Background of the case

The Telangana High Court had earlier granted transit anticipatory bail for one week, directing Khera to seek relief from a jurisdictional court in Assam.

The case stems from a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma over allegations related to passport and property disclosures.

Khera had claimed that the Chief Minister’s wife held multiple passports and owned undisclosed overseas assets. These claims have been denied by the family, which termed the documents as fabricated.

    Political reactions

Earlier, Jairam Ramesh described the police action against Khera as a “witch hunt”.

Further proceedings in the matter are awaited.
