Delhi Customs detain Shashi Tharoor’s PA Shiv Kumar Prasad for gold smuggling case
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s Personal Assistant Shiv Kumar Prasad was booked for smuggling gold into the Airport by Delhi Customs. The agency caught the PA of Tharoor on May 29 for helping a person land from Bangkok. The customs booked a case against both the traveler and Tharoor’s PA in a gold smuggling case at Delhi airport on Wednesday, 29 May. A total of 500 grams of gold with Rs.40 lakh has been recovered from their possession, said Customs officials.
Shiv Kumar Prasad was holding a pass from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and was a frequenter of Delhi Airport. Tharoor’s PA was helping the smuggler from Bangkok. The Customs is now checking the antecedents of Tharoor’s PA in facilitating smuggling activities by misusing the pass on behalf of Tharoor.
On the basis of suspicion, officers of Customs at IGI Airport, New Delhi have booked a case of smuggling of gold against an Indian national who arrived at IGI Airport from Bangkok by flight TG-323 on 29/05/2024, said the Customs in a statement, adding that: “ Further investigations revealed involvement of another individual (Shashi Tharoor PA Shiv Kumar Prasad) who had come to the airport o received the passenger (smuggler from Bangkok) and also assist in smuggling.
“The said individual was intercepted and a heavy gold chain weighing 500 gms was recovered from him which was handed over to the passenger inside the arrival hall. Enquiry revealed that the individual had a valid Aerodrome Entry Permit. The circumstances of acquisition of Aerodrome Entry Permit by the receiver, as a part of protocol team for a member of Parliament, are being looked into.”
Responding to the developments, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said: “I was shocked to hear of an incident involving a former member of my staff who has been rendering part-time service to me in terms of airport facilitation assistance. He is a 72-year-old retiree undergoing frequent dialysis and was retained on a part-time basis on compassionate grounds. I do not condone any alleged wrongdoing and fully support the authorities in their efforts to take any necessary action as may be required to investigate the matter. The law must take its own course.”
