Major terror attack thwarted in J&K’s Rajouri
Less than 48 hours after the Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi chaired a crucial security review meeting to chalk out the strategy to tackle the increasing incidents of terrorist attacks on the security forces in the Jammu region, a heavily armed group of terrorists targeted the house of a Village Defence Committee member and an Army post in the Gunda village of Khawas tehsil in the frontier district of Rajouri in the wee hours of Monday.

The joint team of security forces cordoned off the entire area, and intense firing was going on in the area.
In a post on X, the Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters said, “Terrorists attacked the house of a VDC at Gunda, Rajouri at 0310h. A nearby Army column reacted and a firefight ensued. Operations are continuing”.
The VDC member identified as Parshotam Kumar was recently awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President of India on July 5.
The VDC member had in August 2023 taken on two highly trained guerrilla warfare terrorists of the PAFF-Jaish, who were equipped with sophisticated assault rifles and grenades. According to the award citation presented to Kumar, “Unmindful of his safety, he tailed the two terrorists and (displaying) raw courage and excellent field craft, he closed in on the terrorists and engaged them from a close distance. He maintained contact with the other till (security) forces closed in. His brave act led to the neutralization of one foreign terrorist.”
Unconfirmed reports, however, claimed a terrorist was injured in the firing while one soldier and a close relative of the VDC member also received injuries during the firing.
In the last week, the Indian Army has rushed additional troops and also deployed para commandos to further beef up the security in the areas South of Pir Panjal.
In the coming days, the security forces are expected to remain on tenterhooks as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Drass to participate in the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations commemorating 25 years of Kargil war victory.
