Fighting terror in J&K, MHA moves 2 battalions of Assam Rifles

To contain the incidents of terrorist violence across the peaceful Jammu region, the Union Home Ministry has now decided to rush two additional battalions of the Assam Rifles to flush out the battle-hardened Pakistan terrorists hiding inside well-entrenched safe hideouts located deep inside the jungles of Jammu Heights.

The decision has been taken to strengthen the multi-layered security grid further before holding much-awaited Assembly polls as per the directions of the Supreme Court of India.

The Assam Rifles comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs but operates under the operational control of the Indian Army. The force is staffed by Indian Army officials and is headed by a Lieutenant General as the Director General.

The Assam Rifles with its headquarters in Shillong is expected to establish its base in the Jammu region soon to supervise the smooth deployment.

The Assam Rifles are expected to be shifted to the hilly areas of the Kathua district near Machhedi.

Three thousand additional army troops and 2000 BSF men have been deployed across the region to plug the gaps and launch anti-terrorist operations across different sectors in the aftermath of a sudden uptick in terror strikes.

However, the Union Home Ministry’s decision has triggered some unrest in Manipur.

The violence-hit Churachandpur district has witnessed a massive public protest against the Union government over its purported decision to replace units of the Assam Rifles with those of the Central Reserve Police Force in the sensitive district.

While Kuki groups are opposing this development, the government has decided to proceed with the deployment changes. On the other hand, Meitei groups have alleged that the Assam Rifles favours the Kukis and should be withdrawn from parts of Manipur.

The decision to deploy troops of the Assam Rifles in the Jammu region has been taken after a series of security review meetings took stock of the prevailing security scenario in the areas south of Pir Panjal in the Jammu region.

According to a recent assessment of the different intelligence agencies, more than 50 highly trained Pakistani terrorists are hiding in the upper reaches of Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Udhampur, Kathua, and Reasi districts.

Since January 1, 2024, 14 terror attacks have taken place across six districts of the otherwise peaceful Jammu region, which have resulted in the deaths of 27 people, including 11 security personnel, a village defence guard, and five terrorists.
