Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were martyred in action after suspected militants ambushed their convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday, prompting a massive security operation in the area.

The attack took place on National Highway 202, around 8 kilometres from Ukhrul town, when insurgents opened fire on a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles, officials said.

The soldiers who lost their lives have been identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman C.M. Singh. Several other personnel were also reportedly injured in the attack, though authorities are yet to confirm the exact number.

Following the ambush, security forces launched extensive search and area domination operations, cordoning off the entire region to track down those responsible. Reinforcements have also been rushed to the area as the operation continues.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the ambush and gathering intelligence to identify the perpetrators.

The incident highlights the continuing security challenges in Manipur, where central security forces have been engaged in counter-insurgency operations amid sporadic militant activity and prolonged ethnic unrest.
